Our Story: Built by the Community, for the Community
Black Hills Electric Cooperative was born out of necessity, vision, and determination in 1945. When a local rancher in the remote Black Hills requested service from an investor-owned utility, he faced discouraging costs. Refusing to give up, he turned to the REA program. Through collaboration and persistence, Black Hills Electric Cooperative was formed — bringing power to rural communities across the Black Hills.
We are more than just your electric provider. As a member-owned, not-for-profit organization, we are committed to delivering safe, reliable, and affordable electricity guided by the principles that built us and the members who sustain us. This month, members can help shape the future of Black Hills Electric Cooperative by voting in our board elections. Every active account receives one vote per election, ensuring equal representation.
