Below are some frequently asked questions from our members. If your question isn’t listed or you have additional inquiries, please contact us, and one of our member service representatives will be happy to assist you. We’re here to help you better understand your cooperative and make the most of your membership.
An electric cooperative is a type of electric utility that is owned by the members it serves. A co-op exists solely to provide high-quality service at the lowest cost for its members. BHEC was incorporated in 1940, but construction was delayed due to WWII. We energized our first line in 1945.
Cooperatives are owned by the people they serve. That's why those who receive electric service from a cooperative are called members, not customers. Members maintain democratic control, which means they elect fellow members to represent them on the cooperative's board of directors. Electric cooperatives were established to provide electricity to rural America and now make up the largest electric utility network in the nation. That is the cooperative difference!
The Cooperative Connection monthly newsletter is the primary channel of communication. It includes updates, important news and events, and safety articles that could save your, or a loved ones life. We also send out important messages through SmartHub®. The cooperative also utilizes other communication outlets, such as special mailings and social media updates on Facebook & Instagram.
We currently offer a rebate on Marathon® water heaters. Click here for more information on our water heater program.
We encourage members to contact electricians who sell surge devices that are installed in their breaker panel and we promote devices to use inside the home.
